Academic Petitions…or *Super Happy Fun Time*

Published by perennialsam at 7:57 pm under School Related Edit This

This week I went to see my psychologist at school.  He had prepared a letter of support for a petition I began some time ago, with regard to having two courses removed from my transcript.  My psychologist seems to be very much like me, which probably has a great deal to do with why I feel comfortable talking to him, but I think we possess some of the same weaknesses as well.  He is a very forgetful and absent-minded person.  This was my second or third visit meant partly to pick-up the letter and he did not have it at hand.  However, he said he would send it directly to the Undergraduate Advisor; she needs to sign the petition before I can submit it to the Committee That Decides Your Academic Future.  I can’t remember exactly what their name is…

There are a couple of my incomplete courses that I am not able to finish, and that is what this petition is about.  One course was taught by a visiting professor, who has since returned to her own university.  It was a Middle English Literature course, considered to be somewhat of a language course as a great deal of it involved translation.  A large portion of your mark was derived from class participation and a presentation at the end of the term.  Since I barely went to class and completed very little of the work, I don’t think it would be worth it to seek out this professor in an attempt to somehow finish the course.  Nor would I relish such a task.  The other class I am hoping to have removed from my transcript is an English Grammar course that was also meant to entail a great deal of class participation.

I actually did email the professor for this second course, who informed me that I would not be able to [read:  she won’t let me] complete it without re-attending class.  This was somewhat frustrating, as I have a mark of 48% currently and only need to write the exam and submit one short assignment.  Even if I did poorly on both of those, between the two of them I’m sure I could muster two or three percent.  What a pi$$ off.  I do not know that my school would accept a mark of 51% as a pass, but my marks generally average in the mid- to high-80’s - and the exam is open book!  There is also a way to receive a credit, albeit without a mark, for a course that you have completed 60% of the work for.  I highly doubt that she would be open to granting me this.  She was a very spiteful and contrite individual in person.  Has a daughter that looks and acts just like her - I ran into her in a few of my classes.  The women in that family aggravated me for 8 months.  Argh…

I have another petition to submit as well.  I have two marks for a class that I completed successfully the second time around and would like to have the first mark removed.  For some reason, other students who failed the course the first time it was offered (by a substitute prof.) were given the chance to re-submit all their work and simply have their marks edited.  When I found out and requested the same option I was informed that I was too late, although I technically was not, according to the registrar’s calendar…  I wrote a letter to accompany my petition detailing the situation.  I now also have the professor in question’s signature, supporting removal of the failing mark.  I think she was somewhat baffled as to why she hadn’t corrected the situation when I asked her the first time.  So was I!  o_O  Oh well, with her approval, I’m thinking that the Committee should have no problem accepting my proposal.

At any rate, I hope that the Committee will grant me my three wishes.  If all goes well, three marks that are negatively affecting my average will disappear.

I’m so glad to be out of school. I graduated in 05′, so I remember all the hassle it takes just to get one little thing done at a large school. Good luck!
