The Perennial Sam is a part-time university student who prefers to go by Samantha in real life.

Samantha was a quiet child whose spare time was spent mostly with her nose in a book, or drawing.  She has one sister that is a year younger than her and was her constant companion throughout childhood.  The young Sam’s mother stayed at home to raise her two daughters, until they were of an age to attend school, and then found work outside the home.  Meanwhile, her father was a trained studio musician who manufactured farming implements during the week and travelled to play his music on the weekend.

The Sam excelled in school and was encouraged to pursue a post-secondary education by her teachers and counsellors.  Some hoped that with her academic record she would go on to study law, medecine, or some other elite vocation.  However, Samantha began to experience difficulty in her last two years of highschool.  Always somewhat of a withdrawn individual, she became even more so, and found it difficult to attend to her school work and show up regularly for class as she once had.  Finally, after having dropped out of her final year several times, she was diagnosed with a Major Depressive Disorder when she sought help for social anxiety.

Although her health care professionals speculated that Samantha would not go on to further her education, she began working towards a baccalaureate degree in the fall of 2002.  Choosing English Language and Literature as her major a few years in, the Sam is now nearing the end of her university “career” and is looking forward to moving on with her life.  She would someday like to have a family and become a well-known writer and illustrator.
